History

The Island Writers’ Network of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

When writer Jo Williams moved to Hilton Head Island in 1999, she missed her Charlotte, NC, writers group, so she ran an ad in the Island Packet. Eighteen people responded, and twelve attended the initial meeting. Since then the Island Writers’ Network membership has exceeded sixty active members, over two dozen of whom are currently published, either with traditional publishing houses or e-publishing companies.

Notable alumni/co-founders include Kathryn Wall, author of the popular Bay Tanner mystery series with St. Martin’s Press; Vicky Hunnings with three mysteries by Avalon Press; and Dee Merian, whose memoir, The Best Years of Flying (Headline Books), appeared at Book Expo America in New York City in 2010.

IWN has published five anthologies: Hilton Head Island: Unpacked and Staying (2007), Hilton Headings (2009), Living the Dream (2012), Time and Tide (2015), and Ebb and Flow (2017).
